Researchers active in AI over the decades came to the belief that a plausible candidate that may provide a suitable formal definition of intelligence might manifest through the notion of rationality. The idea being was that theAI agents, which are entities – programs, machines, algorithms - should have the faculty of rationalitythat enables them to perceive and act in the best way given the information available.
Throughout the early years of AI’s history, researchers tended to think of intelligence rather vaguely and with a focus with respect to specific tasks that were thought to be inherent in humans and humans alone. Intelligence was believed to involve (among other things) the ability to understand language, the ability to reason logically, and the ability to solve problems and construct plans to satisfy goals. Moreover, at the core of such human capabilities was a store of knowledge. The standard conception of an AI system was as a sort of machine or something that could be fed information and could then answer questions. Though, importantly outputting the answer was not considered to be an action in itself it was just part of the machines function.
